According to a research study published in the journal Metabolic Syndrome and Related Disorders, only 12% of Americans are metabolically healthy!  Metabolic health is defined as having normal range levels of blood sugar, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, blood pressure, and waist circumference, without using medications.  Less than 0.5% of obese individuals and surprisingly, less than one-third of normal weight individuals were found to be metabolically healthy!  While your weight does make a huge difference in your health, lifestyle and habits are just as important as this research demonstrates.  Poor metabolic health greatly increases your chance of developing diabetes, heart disease, or stroke and also increases your chance of having hormonal imbalances such as thyroid disease, excess cortisol, decreased testosterone, and decreased growth hormone levels.

When you are metabolically unhealthy and your hormones are out of balance, of course you feel tired all the time.  You don't need a pill to fix your condition, you need lifestyle change!  Increasing metabolic health means you must prioritize maintaing a healthy weight, getting adequate sleep, and exercising regularly.  Preventive Health Initiative can help you reach these goals.  We take the approach of getting you moving first - providing a private in-office resistance exercise program with two to three times weekly sessions which will help you develop an exercise habit.  In addition, you will receive professional counseling from a licensed healthcare provider during the sessions.  Counseling is focused on habit and lifestyle change.  A general outline is listed below:

  1. Initial consultation
  2. One-on-one resistance exercise and cardiovascular training are provided with a health professional in our private Nashville office.  (Sessions can be as little as 15 minutes up to 50 minutes based on your schedule)
  3. Counseling and education will be provided during each session.
  4. A plan for continuity of learned interventions will be discussed - our goal is for you to be able to continue on your own after a period of time, either in your own home or a local fitness facility.
  5. Ongoing support will be provided.

We understand limitations such as work schedule, family commitments, etc. and will tailor the program to your needs.  The exercise interventions are not overly intense and we'll help you make gradual lifestyle changes, so do not feel overwhelmed when attempting change  Consistency is key, not super intense interventions that make you hate life!  The goal is for you to learn simple interventions accompanied by significant health education so you will be able to continue on your own indefinitely.  We will provide support for as long as necessary.
